    whatever happened to "auntiepam," auniepam?
    forum spam wins.

and if you actually checked the front page of the site you'd see that Ransom Smith is president of the club.

"east coast swing only" means what? ugh. did you all convene and decide what's "strictly" lindy and what's not? can you explain that to the people on this forum that don't know the difference or necessarily agree with your judges take on it, please?

Do we actually want to officially "send" people to this event or just have our own swing dance that Saturday?

i get the event, and that it makes sense, but your marketing team that wrote up this advertisement is pretty amateur.

you might also want to list who your instructors are, and if your "cha-cha" is american or international, or if the instructors know the difference.

but I don't speak for the club. you better talk to the president.

While I agree that the event could be more professional, it historically has had the support of the lindy hop community. Dismissing it as forum spam is a little harsh.

Good morning, Pam! Let's see, I still haven't made it out to one of these. Perhaps this will be the year.

Hmm! Never having been out, I'm not sure of the competition format, but I assume you want couples, and not individuals or our performance teams (which should be ready to go by then!) I'll talk to people and see if I can figure out who's going.

Ooh, Argentine tango workshops! I need me some of those.

Out of curiosity, who's teaching your Lindy and Bal classes?

    Ransom,

Traditionally, (and Auntie Pam may want to verify) each college sends two couples to dance. This generally includes BYU, UofU, USU, and sometimes Weber and SLCC(?). The event consists of three songs, generally a mixture of fast and medium tempo. The judges choose the winner from those three songs, no further "rounds", no finals, etc.

Also, it has kind of been a question of what consists of somebody from that college. I believe last year that the rule was at least one of the dancers must be a student of that college. A lot of people seem to feel that since it is the "college competition", only students of those colleges should be allowed to compete. Some feel that anyone who goes dancing at that scene can compete, though that leaves the door somewhat wide open. Perhaps Auntie Pam can consult with her people and clarify some of the finer points. Mainly:

Who can represent the college? (Do they have to be students?, just one of them has to be a student?, etc)
What will the judging criteria be?
What kind of dancing will be allowed? (Lindy, Westy, Triple, Bal? any of the above?)
What types of music will be played? (Fast lindy, medium tempo? Are you going to throw some westy stuff in there? etc)
    Anything else?

Well, for those dancers who are not familiar with The Salt Lake Swing Dance Invitational, now in it's fifth year, allow me to walk through it with you.

The events on friday night are named "STRICTLY" Divisions to follow the national sanctioning guidelines - we are striving for a national sanctioning out of this sometime soon and have to comply with terminology dancers all around the nation recognize. Strictly means you bring your own partner, and you get to dance with your own partner - it should be lead follow and not some choreographed routine because you won't know which music will be selected. STRICTLY means STRICTLY that dance. Yes, you can mix in a little bal, a little east/west - but if a judge watches you dance, they should be able to recognize it by the majority of it's content.

The NEW DIVISION for Youth 14-18 is East Coast Swing because I don't know many High Schools that are teaching Lindy or West Coast Swing to 14 year olds. Most Ballroom instructors that I've spoken with include Triple Swing a.k.a East Coast Swing in their Syllibus for their students "because they've always done it that way." It's obviously something I can't change, so I'm trying to introduce these kids who have just had a smidgeon of dance to the real deal. Maybe get them interested in other types of dance lessons and open some more doors to them. THEY ARE OUR FUTURE! That's why I encourage other dance clubs, dance instructors, etc., to bring their promo material on SATURDAY NIGHT

OPEN Jack and Jill means that every level of dancer will be on the floor at the same time, and men will draw for their partner - so again, lead/follow will be critical to be successful.

As for what constitutes a couple from your swing dance club, we always presumed that when people came and represented themselves to be from the swing kids club, that they were also attending the school. So, in order to more clearly define that aspect, we will make it official. Couples who come from a University Swing Kids Club must be members of that Swing Kids Club and also must attend the University they are representing. Makes perfect sense. I think that since the rules were vague, there were various interpretations because the swing kids clubs are not regulated and don't have the same rules as one another.

This isn't my first time to the Rodeo, I went to BYU for 3 years strictly for their dance program, and anyone familiar with dancing obviously knows the difference between American and International Style Ballroom Dancing. I wouldn't hire an instructor to teach Cha Cha unless they knew the difference - and yes, it's going to be American style Cha Cha - because that's what we see the most of on our social dance floors.

Perhaps as a proper introduction, I should mention that I have been teaching social dance for 20 years - and am technically sound. I also ran the only UCWDC Sanctioned Dance Convention in Utah, with 700 dancers through the door the last year I ran it at the Hilton Hotel in SLC. I owned, promoted, marketed and ran it myself. The UCWDC Sanctioning process became too expensive and I dropped it in 97.

I owned/operated 2 different events - and ran 8 conventions. The minimum number at any of the conventions was 180 - the maximum was 700.

During the 90's and early 00, I've judged and taught at numerous Nationally Sanctioned events - both Country Western and Swing dance events. I've been adjunct faculty at U of U, and am currently adjunct faculty at SLCC - teaching partner dance. I have judged dance contests in Orlando, Harrisburgh, Seattle, Denver, Albuquerque, Nashville, Las Vegas and can't remember the rest of the cities. These Nationally Sanctioned events featured dancers that could competantly compete against any of the finest Ballroom Champions in the world. Most of them were trained primarily in Ballroom, but liked C/W music. At UCWDC, the competitions include Waltz, American Style Cha Cha, West Coast Swing, NightClub Two Step, Texas Two Step as their primary dances. Country Western dancing at a Nationally Sanctioned event is nothing like you see locally. Swing Dancing is also improving in Utah - Hence my mission to improve dancing locally. Trying to get everybody caught up with the rest of the country. By bringing the communities together, we can make new friends, appreciate other dance styles and see with our own eyes how we are all growing - hopefully together. I have made many, many friends in the Lindy Community - although I'm mainly a Westie. And I value as well as respect my friends.

Look forward to lots of hugs - if you're a hugger, and lots of noise from the audience. Hope to see you next weekend !
