This article is funny and sad at the same time. But as I was reading it, I thought about Cheri's ring. Now she originally didn't want a diamond ring, but since Grandma left me one, and it just happened to work with the ring we designed, she got one anyway. I had always planned on getting a synthetic diamond because
    (1) it's a diamond, just one that was grown instead of mined
    (2) they are completely flawless (and thus really sparkly)
    (3) they are much more environmentally friendly than mining natural diamonds
    (4) they are orders of magnitude cheaper

    So my question is this:
(Ladies) Do you want a diamond ring? Why or why not?
(Guys) Do you want to give a diamond ring? Why or why not?

If she's hung up on it, I guess we can. But my leaning would be toward "not particularly". Diamond rings are what The Man wants you to wear.

That being said, some kind of ring is probably a good idea, just because it's such a widely-recognised marriage indicator.
