    Part B Research Study Synopsis

    1. Short Study Description: This project will study the influence of immersion living in the Foreign Language Student Residence (FLSR) at BYU on the pronunciation of Spanish learners participating in the programs. The PI will take speech samples from current residents at the beginning of the semester, native speakers living there, and also from age, gender and proficiency-matched Spanish students. The samples will be retaken three months later. All samples will be analyzed acoustically and compared to each other, and then independently rated for comprehensibility, fluency, and accentedness by native speakers.

    b. Will the PI be conducting and/or supervising research activity at any sites not under the jurisdiction of the
BYU IRB? Yes X No If Yes, please list sites:

    4. Subject Information: a. Number of Subjects: A minimum of 30 b. Gender of Subjects: male and female c. Ages of Subjects: 18+

    c. If yes, describe your resources to communicate with the subjects: The PI has had seven years of Spanish training and is near-fluent in the language.

    7. Additional Subject Concerns
    a. Are there cultural attitudes/beliefs that may affect subjects in this study? Yes X No
    b. If yes, please describe attitudes and how they may affect subjects:

    8. Dissemination of Research Findings

    d. Will Payment be prorated? Yes No If yes, please explain:

    12. Extra Credit
    a. Will subjects be offered extra credit? Yes X No If yes, describe the alternative:

    13. Risks
    a. Identify all potential risks/discomforts to subjects: There are no anticipated risks or discomforts, as all students are regularly asked to produce similar speech in their language classes or daily life, and the equipment poses no discomfort.

    14. Benefits
    a. Are there direct benefits to participants? Yes X No If yes, please list:

    b. Are there potential benefits to society? X Yes No If yes, please list: This study will fill an important gap in language acquisition research: the effectiveness of on-campus language houses and their influence on L2 pronunciation. While student housing immersion programs are becoming increasingly popular in the U.S., their effectiveness has not been studied extensively, especially in regard to their ability to improve pronunciation. Also, this study will specifically help us understand the effectiveness of the Foreign Language Student Residence program at BYU. The findings may also demonstrate that BYU’s on-campus language program is a viable model for programs at other institutions, increasing BYU’s influence and sharing its advances in foreign language teaching with the academic community.

    15. Study Procedures
    a. Is the study Therapeutic? X Non-therapeutic?

    b. What will be the duration of the subjects’ participation? Subjects who are asked to make recordings will participate in episodes over the course of a single semester. Subjects who are asked to evaluate speech samples will participate once for no longer than one hour.

    b. Will the subjects be followed after their participation ends? Yes X No If yes, please describe:

    c. Describe the number, duration and nature of visits/encounters. Subjects who are asked to make recordings will meet the PI in a room on campus. They will fill out an approved consent and information form, and then speak sentences into a microphone. The entire procedure is expected to take 5-15 minutes. Subjects who are asked to evaluate speech samples will sign onto a site online that will first present them with an approved consent form they must sign to move beyond. They will then listen to and rate speech samples contained in audio files. Their procedure should take no longer than one hour.

    e. List all procedures that will be performed to generate data for the research. Subjects will fill out and sign an approved consent form, make sound recordings of sentences in Spanish, attend Spanish classes or live in the FLSR, and then make sound recordings again at the end of the semester, OR subjects will sign on to an online system, electronically sign an approved consent form, listen to audio files, and rate the files on a numeric scale.

    f. List all procedures/questionnaires done solely for the purpose of the research study. See appendix F.

    g. List all procedures/questionnaires participants already do regardless of research. Attend a BYU Spanish class or live in the Foreign Language Student Residence.

    16. Informed Consent
    a. Are you requesting Waiver or Alteration of Informed Consent? Yes X No If yes, please fill out the waiver of informed consent and attach it.
    b. Briefly describe your process to obtain consent: Subjects will fill out and sign an approved information and consent form.

    17. Confidentiality:
    a. Are the subject’s social security number, BYU ID number or any identifier (other than study number and initials) being sent off site? Yes X No If yes, describe and explain reasons:

    b. Will any entity other than the investigative staff have access to medical, health or psychological information about the subject? Yes X No If yes, please indicate who:

    c. Briefly describe provisions made to maintain confidentiality of data (including who will have access to raw data, what will be done with the tapes, and etc.). Subjects who are merely signing on to the online server to make evaluations are anonymous; all responses are stripped of identifying information. Subjects who make vocal recordings will be assigned a subject number which will be associated with the data and only relevant, non-identifying information (such as age, gender, and Spanish experience). All other identifiers will be removed. The recordings will be kept in digital storage for possible future scholarly analysis. All consent forms will be kept in a locked cabinet until the research is complete, at which time they will be destroyed.

    d. Will raw data be made available to anyone other than the PI and immediate study personnel? X Yes No

If yes, describe the procedure for sharing data. Include with whom it will be shared, how and why. The anonymous recordings may be used as generic speech samples for future analysis, alone or in combination with their anonymous online evaluation ratings.

    Nick,

There's not much Eugene or Steven can do about that, unless you want
them to rewrite IE 6. What you're seeing is the IE6 fake alpha
compositing rearing its ugly head. Essentially, anywhere where IE
should alpha blend a font edge (i.e. anti-alias), it turns black. It
goes back to the same problem as the png alpha channel bug. If you
want it to go away in IE 6, disable ClearType (font smoothing)...

    Justin
