    Wow,

So I've been obsessing over swing for a little more than a month now, and I've been to an exchange, made team and had a lesson from Frankie Manning himself. I'd say that's a fairly good start... I think I'm nuts... also, I'm pretty sure I'm addicted. Do they make a patch for swing addicts like they do for cigarette addicts?

It's all fine and dandy to completely obsess over it from the get go, but I've heard of that causing burn out. Too much too fast isn't good.

In fact, too much anytime isn't really that good. Pace yourself and you'll enjoy swing dancing much longer me thinks.

I dunno- as a general rule I would agree with that, however there are exceptions. I don't think I missed one single saturday night dance my first year and a half, excepting only when i was out of town (and I was usually out of town in order to dance), I did team 3 months after i started dancing, and went to 7 or 8 national events during my first 12 months (exchanges mostly, but a couple of workshops). I just hit two years, and am still going strong. Though I do concede that the possibility exists that I might get burned out in the future; I just don't think that everybody inevitably will.

It all depends on what your motivations, imo. I'm not in it for social reasons, thought that's a fun perk. The music, the history, the cultural history, the music history, the modern culture, the modern history, the biographies of swing dancers of yesteryear who have passed on and who are still with us, ... all fascinate and inspire me. That's why I've never burnt out. I have cut back occasionally, but never completely (except for a 2-year sabbatical).

I agree. It's not wise to go overkill on something. I actually hurt myself at the exchange... ha ha ha. The muscles in my back went bonkers, probably because I'm not used to throwing girls around for 10 hours a day.

Yeah, it wouldn't take too long to get burned out the social benefits of lindy hop. heh.

I think the "throwing" part may have been the issue. [Emoticon not found]

You do get used to it. I hadn't danced really hard since May (Camp Jitterbug) and my feet sure felt it at Showdown!

That probably depends if you ever are BYU SKC President.

I hope I can get used to it... I don't like the whole 'pain' thing if I don't have to deal with it.

If you're on team, there will probably be some technique lessons that will help you solve the problem causing the pain.

Yeah, we'll have to work on your "throwing" technique [Emoticon not found]
