So what up Ron? I ruled the jungle gym and the monkey bars.
Buzz:Who said we have a Lindy Hop scene? I believe the common term is swing scene.
Uh, we DO have a lindy hop scene, and you're a part of it. I think the meaning of the term "swing scene" varies greatly depending on who's saying it. Mostly I think it's an easier term to say than "lindy hop scene" or "west coast scene." Because it's easier, lindy hoppers will say "swing scene" and mean "lindy hop scene," and west coast swing dancers will say "swing scene" and mean "west coast scene." Yes, in broad terms, "swing scene" means all the lindy hoppers, west coast swing dancers, country swing dancers, and street swing dancers/east coast swing dancers. But that is kind of ridiculous, isn't it? When I'm at an exchange or some other event and someone says "how's the swing scene in Utah?" I'm not going to say "It's really, really big, but most of it is country swing." If I were to say something like that I think I'd be taken as a weirdo. When west coast swing dancers say "swing scene" I doubt us lindy hoppers are anywhere in their minds.
Yeah, the golden skillet, BYU, USU, and whatever else are part of our "swing scene," but 90-99% of the swing dancing done in those venues is lindy hop/charleston/balboa and therefore fits the term "lindy hop" scene just fine. No one asks "how's the charleston scene in Utah?" It probably happens, but I've never heard anyone ask about a "balboa scene." One of the definitions for "scene" from Webster says it's a "sphere of activity." For those of us participating in dances at the skillet, BYU, and USU, our sphere of activity revolves around lindy hop and is therefore a lindy hop scene, but it's easier to say swing scene. I don't care if you throw in 5 west coast songs night*, it still revolves around lindy hop. Make them west coast venues and watch them die.
* Please don't!
Country Swing?!?!? Is it wise to acknolwedge it with a name that has no meaning? Just call it country dancing and be done with it.
the country dance scene really is alot more than country swing. in fact most "real" country dancers never actually do "country "swing. the crap...oops, i mean country swing dancing is moslty done by people who are begiiners in many dance scenes.
popthestack:It probably happens, but I've never heard anyone ask about a "balboa scene."
I believe that one gets asked quite often by visiting balboa dancers.
I second the notion of only calling it country dance, and not country swing
Or maybe country fling dancing... as in, you fling people into other people/objects
country fling is still misleading. It sounds too close.
i've called it the "whip and spin" before, or the "whip and dislocate" too.
Silvia Skylar will be teaching the lessons before the dances on Tues. nights at Studio 600 starting this coming Tues. Feb. 6th. Her lessons will go from 8-9pm then the dance will be from 9-12pm.
Cost is still $4.00 if you come to the lesson or before 9:30pm and $6.00 if you come after 9:30pm.
whoo hoo! I'm excited for the lessons by Sylvia.
t_roach:popthestack:It probably happens, but I've never heard anyone ask about a "balboa scene."

True, but the "balboa scene" is really just a subset of the lindy hop scene, I think. So the question is really "how many people in your lindy hop scene do you have that dance balboa?" Maybe I'm wrong though... it's happened before.
I would say that depends on where you are. Here in utah, maybe. However in SoCal there is most definitely a balboa scene that is very much separate from the lindy scene. The same goes for the blues scenes in some parts of the country.
Chewdawg knows what I'm saying.
there are a ton of portland blues dancers that don't lindy. they're almost more connected with the tango dancers than the swing scene.
Exactly. While it is possible that there is a majority (ie +50%, not 99%) of blues and bal dancers that also lindy, there is also a significant proportion of those scenes that are not lindy hoppers, and that do no form of swing whatsoever.
yes... i love it!!!
Hot Chocolate:yes... i love it!!!
wtf, mate?
Yeah... so whatever though. We are still in a lindy hop scene.
dude... we are blues/westie hop
I was impressed that the USU Big Band Swing club didn't play a westie song all weekend. Or at least not when I was listening.
ummmm.... that would probably be because of the DJ lineup... and that it was a lindy hop event
Hot Chocolate:ummmm.... that would probably be because of the DJ lineup... and that it was a lindy hop event
Dude! It's Harlem Nights!
Vintage, baby. Vintage.
for lack of stylistic flair and entertainment when it had several sparks with which to be so, this thread gets an F.
I hope studio 600 itself is more compelling since it's so far away and i hate parking downtown when i don't have free tickets to jazz at the sheraton.
Maybe we should get some sort of shock device that shocks DJs whenever they play a westie song.
Ya know... at Harlem Nights and ULX when Kenny played some late night westie songs I didn't mind tooo much. Why? #1 his westie music doesn't suck AS bad and #2 because I was watching him and/or Ryan B. dance to it. Me dance to it? Yuck. Watch some good westie? Not so bad like once or twice.
This is not an excuse to play westie songs at BYU (I will still yell at you!) because I don't enjoy watching anyone in Utah do that westie stuff. Sorry everyone.
And? I know my opinion is totally the most important thing.
Studio 600 is cool. Come one come all!
I liike that... the shock thingy... I'm down for helping you with a prototype... hey we can try it on buzz at the next BYU dance he djs
I haven't ahd trouble parking at Studio 600, you just need to come while the price is still $4
and possibly park around the corner.
Hot Chocolate:I liike that... the shock thingy... I'm down for helping you with a prototype... hey we can try it on buzz at the next BYU dance he djs
Sweet. I love being shocked.
Sweet..... prepare to be shocked... there's a double meaning to that.. Seeing as how I will be djing this saturday night...
Yeah, the parking at Studio 600 isn't bad.
